What is double opt-in and how does it work per region?

Last updated March 30, 2026

Answer

Double opt-in (DOI) means new contacts must first confirm their email address via a confirmation link before receiving emails.

DOI is no longer a manual toggle in Modules. The system determines the DOI requirement automatically based on your legal region.

Default behaviour per region

| Region | DOI | |--------|-----| | EU/EEA | Required (GDPR + UWG) | | United Kingdom | Required (PECR) | | Canada | Required (CASL) | | United States | Not required | | Australia | Not required |

How it works

When DOI is active:

  • New contacts from assessments and chatbot receive a confirmation email
  • The confirmation link is valid for 48 hours
  • Only after confirmation is the contact marked as confirmed
  • The confirmation is logged in the consent overview
  • The confirmation email uses your Footer language setting

Setting an override

Want to change the default behaviour for your region? Go to Dashboard > Settings > Legal region and use the Double opt-in override:

  • Default (grey) - follows your region (recommended)
  • On (green) - always require DOI, even if your region does not require it
  • Off (red) - disable DOI, even if your region requires it

Note: disabling DOI for EU/UK/CA may carry legal risks.

Tips

  • Existing confirmed contacts are not affected
  • The confirmation email uses your company name and accent color
  • Unconfirmed contacts do not receive emails via sequences
  • To set your legal region: Dashboard > Settings > Legal region
